History of Property

Long before

The Barn Existed

The land was already shaping its own rhythm.

Set across pasture, orchards and rainforest in the Ballina–Byron Bay hinterland, the property has always held a balance between cultivated spaces and untouched wilderness. Some areas are actively farmed and tended to with each season, while others remain protected habitat for wildlife, including native birdlife and even koalas.

That balance continues to guide how the land is cared for today.

From the beginning, The Barn was designed to feel like an integrated part of the landscape — not placed on top, but gently woven into it.

The build unfolded slowly, over around a year and a half, with much of the material sourced directly from the property itself. Timber was milled on site and used throughout the buildings, including in the making of the large barn doors that have become such a defining part of the space.

Working with fresh timber required patience.
The wood shifted, settled and changed over time, inviting flexibility and care as the project evolved.

The entire process was deeply hands-on and intentional.

Each rock placed thoughtfully.
Each tree and plant chosen with the future in mind.
Spaces shaped to feel open, connected and in conversation with the land around them.

Like the property itself, the build moved through its own seasons.

Ideas changed.
Plans adapted.
Some things came together easily, while others took their time.

But throughout it all, the intention stayed the same — to create a place that feels grounded, welcoming and deeply connected to its surroundings.

And the story is still unfolding.

Gardens continue growing.
Orchards mature with each passing season.
The soil deepens and regenerates.
The rainforest remains quiet and protected.

The Barn was never intended to feel finished.

It continues to evolve slowly over time — shaped by the land, the seasons and the people who spend time here.

Exceptionally well thought out and loved the variety of teas as we usually have to bring green tea with us. Very relaxing watching the cattle graze. The property backs on to a state forest with walking trails and more fantastic views over the ocean. The kitchen and outdoor kitchen are a foodies dream.
