Owners' Story
The idea for The Barn didn’t begin with a building.
It began with a feeling.
After years of travel, work and time spent in meeting rooms and busy environments, there was a growing sense that something was missing. So many of the places where people gathered felt rushed, closed off and overly transactional.
Conversations were happening — but they weren’t always as meaningful as they could have been.
The Barn was imagined as a gentler alternative.
A place where people could slow down, breathe more deeply and connect in a more natural way.
A place where conversations unfold around the fire, over long meals or with a coffee in hand as the morning light moves across the land.
Somewhere that feels open. Grounded. Human.
Over time, one thing became increasingly clear — the environment you’re in shapes the way you think, feel and relate to one another. When people step outside their usual routines, something shifts. There’s more space for clarity, honesty, creativity and connection.
The idea behind The Barn was also deeply personal.
Growing up in a big family meant noise-filled kitchens, shared meals, people lingering around the table. Time spent together without needing a reason. That feeling — warm, relaxed and unforced — became an important part of what this place would become.
You still feel it here now.
In groups gathered around the kitchen bench.
Friends sharing a long lunch.
Teams engaging to greater depths.
A quiet moment spent reading on the deck while dinner is being prepared nearby.
These are the moments that stay with you.
Early mornings before the day begins.
The warm smell of coffee brewing.
The fresh feel of mist moving through the trees.
Afternoons stretched out by the pool as the light dances across the valley.
Evenings where the fire is lit and conversations continue long after dinner is over.
Over time, the space has taken on a rhythm of its own.
People arrive for all kinds of reasons — celebration, reconnection, rest, reflection, or working through something important together.
What they often leave with is the feeling that they were truly present while they were here.
In many ways, The Barn is a response to the pace of modern life.
A place to reconnect with people, with nature and with what matters most.

The Barn sits on 200 acres of pasture, orchards and protected rainforest in the Ballina–Byron Bay hinterland.
This is a working landscape — one that’s lived in, cared for and slowly evolving through the seasons.
Orchards, market gardens and herb beds supply the kitchen, while pasture and regenerating areas continue to grow and shift over time.
Much of the property is protected rainforest and koala habitat, with walking trails that wind through the trees and along the ridgelines.
Early mornings and late afternoons often draw people out for a wander — when the light is softer and the air feels still.
Closer to the buildings, there are gardens, outdoor dining spaces and open areas to gather or settle in for a while.
Further out, paddocks stretch wide, small golf holes are tucked into the landscape and there are quiet places where you can pause and take a moment for yourself.
The land is cared for using regenerative, spray-free practices.
With time and attention, the soil deepens, the gardens expand, and the property continues to grow into itself.
Most people arrive looking to retreat.
But often the land, with its pace, its quiet, its presence, becomes the most memorable part of being here.

I had the absolute pleasure of attending a corporate retreat at The Barn Corporate Retreat Byron Bay, in May-25, as a corporate event with PA Network. A passion project created and built by Dave, his journey is as breathtaking as the idyllic surroundings. For a team who are looking for authentic collaboration, to be pushed forward by open and honest discussions, whilst experiencing luxury in rustic setting, this is for you! There is no hiding here. It's a journey from burnout to wellness, from ego to authenticity. The Barn is Australia’s first corporate retreat space that fully integrates the expertise of top strategic designers with a hinterland getaway like no other.
